Celas Maya Spanish School
During the summer of 2010, I attended Celas Maya for seven weeks for an intensive course in Spanish language. I was used to five hours of Spanish a day, five days a week, and activities and trips that emphasized the Guatemalan culture. When I returned to the United States, I needed to maintain the momentum that I had achieved with the language. Celas Maya offered Skype classes online where one could study Spanish, one on one, in the manner that I had become accustomed to.
I was a little nervous about the technology, and use of Skype itself, until I tried the short group of lessons as one of several options that were available. Skype wasn´t a problem at all, and I was surprised to find that the online lessons were almost as good as actually being in Guatemala. I was even able to get the same instructor that I had studied with in Celas Maya. Homework was sent via email as an attachment, and I submitted my work back to the school where my instructor looked over my answers. The beginning of the next lesson was usually spent on going over the returned homework, and I was pleased to find highlighted areas that needed more attention. I´m now on my third block of Skype lessons and I find these lessons to be much more efficient than the classes in the university nearby. I see myself continuing my Spanish lessons throughout the winter and spring until I can return to Central America in the summer!
The Celas Maya Online Program is an excellent way for Spanish students of any level to receive one-on-one instruction from anywhere in the world. Teachers prepare material and assignments that are tailored to the student's skill level, and meeting times can be adjusted to fit individual schedules. My instructor meticulously corrected all of my papers and written responses, and discussed them with me during each meeting-even after returning home to the United States, I was able to maintain my speaking and listening comprehension skills, as well as work on my grammar and writing. I highly recommend the program to former students of Celas Maya who want to maintain their Spanish after returning home, or any student of Spanish that wishes to study under a flexible but rigorous program!
"Learning Spanish was a daunting prospect but Julio made me feel relaxed from the first time we spoke. Our lessons are fun and flexible, so I don't feel rushed and I was surprised at how fast I progressed through the programme."
Celas Maya school and online classes
I never even had one Spanish class in school when I came to Celas Maya for the first time, after only a couple of weeks I was actually speaking Spanish with my teachers. The support, encouragement and extra-curricular activities create an environment that really facilitates the language learning experience. I enjoyed it so much that I began taking online classes and I was amazed at how easy it was to begin. All I needed was a web-cam and an internet connection and I could do the class from anywhere. The teachers were professional and committed to teaching Spanish to my level of knowledge and they helped me to advance with lots of encouragement and minimal frustration. If you can't be in Guatemala at Celas Maya then I highly recommend the online classes as another excellent learning tool offered by the school.

Before coming to CELAS MAYA, I already completed two to three years of Spanish at a local community college, including one class in conversational Spanish. However, after learning all the grammar and vocabularies taught in the classroom, I still could not speak the language with any level of confidence. At that point, I decided to try online classes and see if it would be more effective. After a lot of searching and comparison, I chose CELAS MAYA, mainly for its reputation, quality teaching staff, flexibility and very reasonable tuition.
I have been taking online Spanish with CELAS MAYA for about a year and half, totaling about 80 hours class time now. At the beginning, it was very stressful for me because with online classes, there was no place to hide for the student. Each session, I got 100% attention and I had to give 100% participation. But for the very same reason, I have made so much progress in 80 hours than in three years, 20 credit hours, at the college.
Each week, I do one composition where I practice grammar and vocabulary and express my own ideas in Spanish. Sometimes I would also do sentences to get all the conjugations correct. During class, my teacher and I would converse on all sorts of subjects, serious or non-serious alike. I find my teacher very knowledgeable and open-minded so we can go on for 2 hours, hardly running out of topics. It has really given me a lot of practice to speak and to listen, and above all, to put my book knowledge to work. Now, the online classes are no longer stressful and I love it. I am sure that you will love it too.
