This special course for children is taught by professors whose primary profession is teaching children in primary school, but who have continued their education and practice to include teaching Spanish as a second language. The teachers understand the psychology of the child and their learning processes, and the teachers possess a wealth of knowledge and integrate recreational activities in order to work at a pace and level that is appropriate and engaging for the child.
The foundation of this program is learning vocabulary, sentence formation and learning simple sentences through song.
Afterward, the students will learn to give a presentation about themselves and articulate their daily activities which correspond to level A1. The child will gradually progress and continue to level A2, at which point the child will be able to describe the variety of activities occurring in their social sphere.
This course utilizes the resources of Celas Maya to stimulate discussion and learning, including reading materials, learning exercises, and photographs of Latin America culture. To help students share their stories, we also ask them to use their own photos during class.
As a requirement for working with children we begin with an interview which includes the child and the child's parent or guardian, a member of the office staff at Celas Maya, and the teacher. This provides an opportunity to introduce all parties involved and familiarize the child and parent or guardian with the program. This interview counts as a free one-hour trial lesson.
Skype classes for children are conducted from our school and guarantee constant supervision of work and the same level of confidence offered by working in a school setting. Our teachers have years of experience working as classroom teachers and will be able to engage students with their dynamic teaching styles.
This program is coordinated by Professor Gladys Carolina Pérez, a teacher at Chacap elementary school of the Municipality of Zunil, Quetzaltenango who is also an ELE teacher and certified by the Cervantes Institute as a DELE examiner.
